N.Peal is one of Britain’s most iconic, luxury cashmere knitwear and accessories brands founded in London by Nat Peal in 1936. It is recognised globally for its quality, sophistication and understated elegance, with its cashmere jumpers adorned by many famous faces over the years, ranging from Marilyn Monroe to James Bond. It is owned by Adam Holdsworth with its Head Office situated in Beamsley, North Yorkshire.

Cashmere quality

N.Peal prides itself on tracing its cashmere right back to the individual herders, who tend their goats on the vast steppes of Mongolia. By truly understanding the supply chain and controlling the entire process, the Company sets strict quality standards for every part of the cashmere process.

History

1936–1945 – The Beginning

The first N.Peal store was opened as a Men’s haberdashery in London’s Burlington Arcade in Mayfair by businessman Nat Peal in March 1936. Peal’s real name was Leapman; the first part of his name was transposed to sound more traditionally ‘British’.

When World War II broke out in 1939, Peal was stationed on the Shetland Islands.[1] During this time he supplied his store with high-quality sweaters woven directly from the wool of Shetland sheep. As wool was being rationed during wartime, Peal was able to harness the demand for high-quality knitwear in Britain.

1945–1950s – After the War

When peacetime was restored, Peal returned to London and reinstated cashmere wool as the principal material in his knitwear. Peal began to make annual trips to New York and Boston to grow his business in the United States of America.

2007 – Change of Ownership

The N.Peal brand was purchased by Adam Holdsworth in 2007. At the time, Managing Director Holdsworth had more than 25 years of experience in cashmere manufacture.

2012 - Appearance in Skyfall

In 2012 A blue round neck sweater from N.Peal was seen being worn by Daniel Craig as James Bond in Skyfall.[2]

2013 – Refurbishment of famous Arcade

In 2013 the N.Peal flagship store in Burlington Arcade received a full refurbishment, the concept was taken from the clean refinement of those original Deco years where the greens were minty and the typography was curved. The result was a store that echoed the early days but also felt appropriately modern.[3]

2015 – Appearance in Spectre

Three different styles of N.Peal cashmere sweaters were seen to be worn by Daniel Craig as James Bond in Spectre. He was also spotted wearing an Oxford Round Neck Sweater for the Spectre Film Press Launch.

2018 – New York Store Opens

N.Peal opened a brand new store in stylish Madison Avenue, New York which was a key step in its international expansion.

Stores

N.Peal has five stores in London: the flagship store in the famous Burlington Arcade since 1936, and others that are located in Knightsbridge Covent Garden, Brook Street and St. James Piccadilly.

Most recently in 2018, the brand opened a new store on Madison Avenue, New York. The N.Peal Head Office is in Beamsley, North Yorkshire.
