}}Nurlan Nigmatulin (born 31 August 1962) is a Kazakh politician and statesman. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan since 2016. He is known commonly as a key political figure in Akorda, and was considered to be associate of President Nursultan Nazarbayev, with some believing that Nigmatulin is a potential successor to Nazarbayev.[1]

Early life and career

Nurlan Nigmatulin was born on 31 August 1962, in the then Soviet city of Karaganda (also known as Qaraghandy), which is currently the capital of the Karaganda Region of the Kazakh SSR in the Asian portion of the USSR. From 1984-1985, he was a ln engineering specialist at the Karagandaoblgaz car factory. He entered local politics at the age 23 of as first secretary of the Leninsky District Committee of the Young Communist League of Kazakhstan. He continued his youth work even after the fall of the USSR, working until 1993 as the Chairman of the Committee of Youth Organizations of Kazakhstan. That year, he became President of the Kazakh-American Joint Venture "Tengri". He entered Kazakh politics in 1995 at the age of 33, becoming the State Inspector as well as deputy head of the organizational department of the Presidential Administration.

He was elected Mayor of Astana in 1999 and eventually rose through the ranks to become the Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Kazakhstan 3 years later. In 2004, he became the Deputy Head of the Administration of the President of Kazakhstan before becoming the 4th Governor of the Karaganda Region in January 2006. Nigmatulin became more involved in national politics, serving as a deputy to the Chairman of the Nur Otan party before being unanimously elected in 2012 as the Chairman of the Mazhilis of the Parliament, where the party holds a majority. On 3 April 2014 appointed as the Head of the Presidential Administration of the President of Kazakhstan. On 22 June 2016, Nigmatulin was unanimously was elected a second time as the Chairperson of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of Kazakhstan's 6th Convocation from the Nur Otan party.[2][3][4][5][6]

He is currently{{when?|date=November 2018}} married with three children and two granddaughters.{{fact|date=November 2018}} His Twin brother Erlan Nigmatulin is an ex-deputy in the Kazakh Senate and a member of the Committee for Nature Management and Rural Development.{{fact|date=November 2018}} His Brother Argyn Nigmatulin is the director of a state hockey enterprise.{{fact|date=November 2018}} His hobbies include playing Tennis and Soccer.{{fact|date=November 2018}} Besides his native Kazakh language, Nigmatulin also speaks two additional languages, Russian and English.{{fact|date=November 2018}}
