As of 2012, the district had a population of 24,165.[1] The district covers an area of 1388.0839 km². The district was established on November 2, 2012 under Decree No.71/NQ-CP/2012 of the Government of Vietnam. Nậm Nhùn includes 1 town and 10 villages:
