HistoryThe OAPI was founded in 2015 by Randi Lee Harper, with Crash Override Network's Zoë Quinn and Alex Lifschitz stated as serving on the inaugural board of directors.[1] In March 2015 Quinn announced a formal partnership between the two organizations. ActivitiesThe stated goals of the OAPI are to study online abuse, and to reduce and mitigate it through technical measures and collaboration with tech companies.[1] Its first public campaign was an open letter to ICANN, the organization responsible for coordinating the Internet's Domain Name System, opposing the latter's plans to end anonymity of WHOIS records for commercial websites. OAPI argues that ICANN's proposals will make it easier for abusers to physically endanger domain name registrants through doxxing and swatting,[4][5] and that those marginalized for their race, gender, or sexual orientation are disproportionately at risk.[6] The letter attracted signatures and support from over fifty organizations supporting online privacy or protection of at-risk communities, including the Electronic Frontier Foundation, The Tor Project, and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.[4][6] The project is funded entirely by donors via Patreon.[1] References1. ^{{cite web | url=https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/apr/13/online-abuse-how-women-are-fighting-back | title=Online abuse: how women are fighting back | publisher=The Guardian | date=2016-04-13 | accessdate=2016-04-13 | author=Alexander, Leigh}} [2][3][4][5]2. ^1 2 {{cite news |author-last=Hern |author-first=Alex |title=Icann plan to end website anonymity 'could lead to swatting attacks' |url=https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/jul/07/icann-plan-to-end-website-anonymity-could-lead-to-swatting-attacks |newspaper=The Guardian |location= |date=2015-07-10 |accessdate=2015-07-18 }} 3. ^1 2 {{cite web |url=http://www.clubic.com/internet/actualite-773098-icann-coeur-polemique.html |title=L'ICANN : vers la fin d'un Internet anonyme |author-last=Belfiore |author-first=Guillaume |date=2015-07-09 |website=Clubic |publisher=M6web |accessdate=2015-07-18}} 4. ^1 2 {{cite web |url=https://onlineabuseprevention.wordpress.com/ |title=About OAPI |author= |date= |website=Online Abuse Prevention Initiative |publisher= |accessdate=2015-07-18}} 5. ^1 {{cite news |author-last=Mitchell |author-first=Benjamin F. |title=Move to combat piracy could increase Internet harassment, activists say |url=https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2015/07/07/piracy-concerns-threaten-domain-name-privacy/29825455/ |newspaper=USA Today |location= |date=2015-07-07 |accessdate=2015-07-18 }} }} External links
