Upton and S. H. Rock petitioned Senator John H. Mitchell asking for a mail route to Grand Ronde and a post office.[3] Upton owned a seal marked "Oregon City", so he suggested the new post office be named "Ore City" and he would alter the seal so it could be used for the new community.[3] Mitchell knew confusion with Oregon City would occur, and suggested the name "Oretown" to the postal authorities instead.[3] The name was accepted and Oretown post office ran from 1877 to 1954.[3] Today Oretown has a Cloverdale mailing address.[4] At one time Oretown had a cheese factory and a salmon cannery.[5] Today the community has a historic church, the 1913 Oretown Bible Church, a Grange hall built in 1907, and a few houses.[4][5][6][7] References1. ^1 2 {{cite web | work = Geographic Names Information System| publisher = United States Geological Survey | date =November 28, 1980| url ={{Gnis3|1147268}}| title = Oretown| accessdate =December 18, 2016}} 2. ^{{cite book |title= Oregon Atlas & Gazetteer |edition= 7th |year= 2008 |publisher= DeLorme |location= Yarmouth, Maine |isbn= 0-89933-347-8 |page= 26}} 3. ^1 2 3 {{Cite OGN|7th|page=730}} 4. ^1 {{cite web |url= http://www.pcnvchamber.org/directory.html?show=284 |title= Oretown Bible Church |publisher= Pacific City - Nestucca Valley Chamber of Commerce: Member Dirctory |accessdate= February 26, 2012}} 5. ^1 {{cite book |title= In Search of Western Oregon |author= Friedman, Ralph |authorlink= Ralph Friedman |year= 1990 |edition= 2nd |page= 40 |publisher= The Caxton Printers, Ltd |location= Caldwell, Idaho |isbn= 0-87004-332-3}} 6. ^{{cite web |url= http://heritagedata.prd.state.or.us/historic/index.cfm?do=v.dsp_siteSummary&resultDisplay=38203 |title= Oretown Bible Church |publisher= Oregon Historic Sites Database: Oregon Department of Parks and Recreation |accessdate= February 26, 2012}} 7. ^{{cite web |url= http://heritagedata.prd.state.or.us/historic/index.cfm?do=v.dsp_siteSummary&resultDisplay=38178 |title= Oretown Grange Hall |publisher= Oregon Historic Sites Database: Oregon Department of Parks and Recreation |accessdate= February 26, 2012}} External links
