Gaskin wrongly synonomised Crambus sophistes with Orocrambus cyclopicus.[4][5] It is endemic to New Zealand.[6] This species has been recorded from the eastern South Island and the southern part of the North Island.[7] The habitat consists of lowland to alpine grasslands.[7] The wingspan is 22–30 mm.
