Smith School of Business or the Smith School of Business (formerly the Queen's School of Business) is a business school located at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. The school offers undergraduate and graduate programs as a part of Queen's University, but is managed separately with its own dean and budget. The school of business became its own faculty in 1963 with its first dean, Lawrence MacPherson. The current dean at the Smith School of Business is Dr. David Saunders.
On October 1, 2015, the Queen's School of Business was renamed The Stephen J.R. Smith School of Business in recognition of a $50-million donation from Stephen J.R. Smith. The donation is the largest gift ever made to a Canadian business school.[2] This donation nearly doubled the school's already significant endowment from $54 million to $104 million. As of 2015, this will result in Smith being an extremely close second in total endowment amongst all Canadian Business Schools, next to only the Rotman School of Management. Two thirds of the donation will be channelled towards attracting professors and faculty, while the remaining third will form a pool of scholarships and bursaries designed to attract students from around the world. The school is fully accredited by the AACSB (United States) and the EFMD (EQUIS) (Europe). NamingOn October 1, 2015, the Queen's School of Business was renamed The Stephen J.R. Smith School of Business in recognition of a $50-million donation from Stephen J.R Smith, a graduate of the Queen's University's Faculty of Engineering. ProgramsUndergraduateThe undergraduate program offers students extracurricular options in the fields of Consulting, Accounting, Marketing and Finance. These include student-run security portfolios, consulting firms, and dozens of conferences.
The Queen's Commerce undergraduate business program also provides its students with an international exchange option for their third year of study. The Smith School of Business is partnered with over 95 business schools in over 35 countries such as Bocconi University in Italy and HEC Paris in France, and the majority of students participate in the exchange. Queen's allows students to pursue an Arts and Science degree concurrently with their Bachelor degree Commerce to graduate with two degrees in their four years. GraduateFull-time MBAThe Queen's Full-Time MBA program (previously Queen's MBA for Science and Technology) was ranked as the number one full-time MBA program in Canada and number one outside of the U.S. by bi-annual ranking of Business Week in 2004, 2006, and 2008.[3] Environics ranked the Queen's Full-time MBA program number one in Canada in 2006 in their Report on Executive Education in Canada.[4] In the 2012 QS Global 200 Business Schools Report[5] the school was indexed as the 3rd best business school in Canada and the 16th best business school in North America.[6] Accelerated MBA for Business GraduatesThe Queen's Full-Time Accelerated MBA for Business Graduates program is one of the best MBA programs in Canada for people with an undergraduate degree in Business. In 2017 Financial times ranking, Queen's MBA is ranked 50th in the world [7]and in 2018 The Economist ranking, Queen's MBA is ranked 88th in the world [8] The program is 12 months in length and the admission decision is dependent on applicants progressive work experience, previous academic grades in undergraduate business degree, GMAT and personal interview.[9] Executive MBAThe Queen's Executive MBA program has been ranked as the best program in Canada for Executive MBAs by BusinessWeek[10] and Environics.[4]{{Citation needed|date = February 2016|reason = Claims need links to actual rankings and not to press releases, blog posts, school websites, etc.}} The program is 16 months in length and the admission decision is dependent on the applicants management experience, references, previous academic experience, QMAT (or GMAT) scores and a personal interview. Queen's Master of Management AnalyticsThe Queen’s Master of Management Analytics Queen's Master of FinanceQueen's Master of Management, Innovation & EntrepreneurshipThe Queen's Master of Management, Innovation & Entrepreneurship (MMIE) program is offered in partnership with the Queen's Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science.[12] LocationAlmost all business classes are held in Goodes Hall, which sits at the northwest corner of Queen's University campus. The building is named in honour of the family of Mel Goodes, a Commerce ‘57 alumnus and former Chairman & CEO of Warner–Lambert Worldwide. September 2012 marked the completion of a significant expansion of Goodes Hall, increasing the size of the facility by 75,000 ft² to a total of 188,000 ft². The expansion includes several new classrooms and student breakout rooms, as well as 51 additional faculty offices and many enhanced features for students. The Smith School of Business opened its first foreign campus in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, at the DIFC on May 25, 2007. Classes started in October 2007.
