LocationThe Palace of Justice is located on the Place de Verdun in the centre of Aix-en-Provence.[1] HistoryArchitect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux was commissioned to build the palace in 1787.[1][2] Two hundreds houses were demolished to make space for the new construction.[1] However, construction was discontinued because of the French Revolution of 1789.[1] It resumed in 1822, when architect Michel Penchaud took over.[1] The building was finally completed in 1831.[1] The building is flanked by two sculptures Joseph-Marius Ramus: on the left, Jean-Étienne-Marie Portalis; on the right, Joseph Jérôme, Comte Siméon. Heritage significanceIt has been listed as a monument historique since 1979.[3] Gallery{{Gallery|title=Palace of Justice of Aix-en-Provence |width=160 |height=170 |lines=4 |align=center |File:Palais de justice Aix-en-Provence.jpg | |Palace of Justice with sculpture of Jean-Étienne-Marie Portalis on the left side |File:Colonnade palais de Justice by JMC.jpg | |Palace of Justice with sculpture of Joseph Jérôme, Comte Siméon on the right side |File:Mirabeau Palais de Justice Aix en Provence.jpg| |Sculpture of Honoré Gabriel Riqueti, comte de Mirabeau inside the Palace of Justice |File:Palais de Justice place de Verdun Aix-en-Provence potelet.JPG| |Historical marker about the Palace of Justice }} References{{commons category|Palais de justice d'Aix-en-Provence}}1. ^1 2 3 4 5 City of Aix-en-Provence: Palais de justice {{coord|43.5285|N|5.4504|E|source:wikidata|display=title}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Palace of Justice of Aix-en-Provence}}{{France-struct-stub}}2. ^Allan Brahan, The Architecture of the French Enlightenment, Oakland, California: University of California Press, 1989, p. 197 [https://books.google.com.au/books?id=EstKYtJpOK0C&pg=PA197&dq=palais+de+justice+aix&hl=en&sa=X&ei=QLmeVK3LM8XEmQXYxIGICA&ved=0CEEQ6AEwBA#v=onepage&q=palais%20de%20justice%20aix&f=false] 3. ^Ministry of Culture: Listed buildings 3 : Monuments historiques of Aix-en-Provence|Government buildings completed in 1831|Neoclassical architecture in France |
