It is typical of the Sicilian cuisine[1] created originally in Catania, Sicily, Italy. The original recipe is made with macaroni (typical italian pasta), tomatoes, fried aubergines (eggplant), grated ricotta salata cheese, and basil. The name of the dish is said to originate from the apocryphal exclamation by the Italian writer Nino Martoglio who, upon tasting the dish, exclaimed "This is a real 'Norma'!",[2] comparing it with the exceptional perfection of the Vincenzo Bellini opera Norma.
