Dr Patrick Blair MD FRS (1666–1728) was a Scottish surgeon, anatomist and botanist, and a Fellow of the Royal Society.

Life

He was born in Dundee in 1666. He trained as a doctor and saw service with the British Army in the Netherlands as a surgeon-apothecary before setting up practise in Dundee.[1]

He was introduced to Hans Sloane by Charles Preston in 1705.{{sfn|Guerrini|2004}}

In 1706 Blair publicly dissected an elephant (part of a travelling circus) which had died on a hot summer's day on Ferry Road in Dundee. He did as much as he could on the Saturday which the beast died, but had to abandon work until monday in order to observe the Sabbath. He mounted the resultant bones, and contributed a description, under the title of Osteographia Elephantina, to the Royal Society of London, published in 1713. He delivered some discourses before the Royal Society on the sexes of flowers.{{sfn|Bettany|1886}}

In 1707 he dissected and prepared the skeleton of a porter who had hung himself in the stairway of St Andrews University and this was placed in the Anatomy lecture room from 1722. Blair received 100 merks for this work.

In 1710 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London.

In 1715 he was induced into joining the Jacobite army. He was arrested and imprisoned at Newgate Prison, and came perilously close to being executed, but was reprieved. However, he decided to stay and live in London, where he remained for many years, He then settled at Boston, Lincolnshire, where he died in 1728.{{sfn|Bettany|1886}}

Publications

Blair published Miscellaneous Observations on the Practice of Physick, Anatomy, and Surgery in 1718, Botanick Essay in 1720, and Pharmaco-botanologia in 1723–8, which ended with the letter H. His Botanick Essays were his major work. In them he expounded the progress of the classification of plants up to his time, and the then novel views as to the sexual characters of flowering plants, adding his own observations.{{sfn|Bettany|1886}}
