Father Patrick James McGlinchey (6 June 1928[1] – 23 April 2018) was an Irish Catholic missionary from Raphoe, County Donegal. He was credited with mobilizing international support and foreign volunteers to modernize livestock farming in South Korea. He arrived in Jeju, South Korea in 1954 under the auspices of the Missionary Society of St. Columban, and established the St. Isidore Farm in 1961. His work with the latter earned him the nickname "pig priest".[2] He received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1975 and Ireland's Presidential Distinguished Service Award in 2014.[2][3] He died on 23 April 2018 at the age of 89 while undergoing treatment for myocardial infarction and kidney failure.[2] After his death, he was named an Honorary Citizen of South Korea in June 2018 in a ceremony attended by his nephew.[4] References1. ^New York State, Passenger and Crew Lists, 1917-1967 for Patrick J McGlinchey of St Columban's, Navan, Ireland {{authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:McGlinchey, Patrick James}}{{Ireland-bio-stub}}{{SouthKorea-bio-stub}}2. ^1 2 {{cite news|url=https://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/culture/2018/05/293_248124.html|last=Kang|first=Hyun-kyung|title=Irish priest, social entrepreneur McGlinchey dies|newspaper=The Korea Times|date=29 April 2018|access-date=11 June 2018}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://rmaward.asia/awardees/mcglinchey-patrick-james/|title=McGlinchey, Patrick James|publisher=Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation|access-date=11 June 2018}} 4. ^{{cite news|url=http://english.yonhapnews.co.kr/news/2018/06/05/0200000000AEN20180605010300315.html|title=Late Irish Catholic priest awarded honorary citizenship|agency=Yonhap|date=5 June 2018|access-date=11 June 2018}} 5 : 1928 births|2018 deaths|People from Raphoe|Irish Roman Catholic priests|Missionary Society of St. Columban |
