Born in Bebington on the Wirral, Nowak started work at Asda at the age of seventeen, and immediately joined a union. He became Vice President of the Wirral Trades Union Council at the age of nineteen – the youngest person ever to hold the post. Taking posts in a variety of unions, Nowak has been an activist in the Communication Workers Union, GMB Union and Unison.[1] In 1998, he was active in the Banking Insurance and Finance Union, when was one of the first students at the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Organising Academy.[2] Nowak later worked for the TUC, as regional secretary of the Northern TUC, and then as head of its organising department. He also served on the board of ACAS.[2] In February 2013, he was appointed joint Assistant General Secretary of the TUC,[3] and in February 2016, he was promoted to become Deputy General Secretary.[4] References1. ^Eleanor Barlow, "Wirral man Paul Nowak appointed assistant general secretary of the Trades Union Congress", Liverpool Echo, 26 February 2013 {{s-start}}{{s-npo|union}}{{succession box|title=Assistant General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress|years=2013–2016|with=Kay Carberry|before=Kay Carberry|after=Post vacant}}{{succession box|title=Deputy General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress|years=2016–present|before=Post vacant|after=Incumbent}}{{s-end}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Nowak, Paul}}2. ^1 Pete Murray, "TUC appoints senior organiser to new top job {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131105160552/http://union-news.co.uk/2013/02/tuc-appoints-senior-organiser-to-new-top-job/ |date=2013-11-05 }}", Union News, 13 February 2013 3. ^"Paul Nowak, Assistant General Secretary", Trades Union Congress 4. ^Trades Union Congress, "[https://www.tuc.org.uk/about-tuc/paul-nowak-appointed-tuc-deputy-general-secretary Paul Nowak appointed TUC Deputy General Secretary]", 25 February 2016 4 : 1972 births|Living people|Leaders of British trade unions|People from Bebington |
