For statistical purposes, the United States Census Bureau has defined Peoria as a census-designated place (CDP). The census definition of the area may not precisely correspond to local understanding of the area with the same name. Lacking stores and services, it is a cluster of houses plus a county park along Peoria Road, about {{convert|10|mi|km}} south of Oregon Route 34.[3] As of the 2010 Census, the population was 94.[1] HistoryPeoria, named for Peoria, Illinois, was first settled in 1851 by H. A. McCartney. By 1875, the community was prosperous enough to have four grain warehouses and a school with 60 pupils. However, after the Oregon and California Railroad established a line through Shedd and Halsey further east, business in Peoria declined.[4] A post office in this vicinity opened in 1855 under the name Burlington. The name was changed to Peoria in 1857, and the office closed in 1900.[4] Through the early decades of the 20th century, a river ferry operated out of Peoria.[3] References1. ^1 {{cite web|title= Population and Housing Occupancy Status: 2010|publisher= U.S. Census Bureau|url=http://factfinder2.census.gov/faces/tableservices/jsf/pages/productview.xhtml?pid=DEC_10_PL_GCTPL2.ST10&prodType=table|accessdate=December 3, 2014}} 2. ^1 {{cite gnis|id=1125295|name= Peoria|entrydate=November 28, 1980 |accessdate= December 3, 2014}} 3. ^1 {{cite book|author=Williams, Travis|title=The Willamette River Field Guide|publisher=Timber Press|location=Portland, Oregon|year=2009|pages=100–03|isbn=978-0-88192-866-2}} 4. ^1 {{cite book | last = McArthur | first = Lewis A. | authorlink = Lewis A.
