Stead's family had been engaged in building for several generations. In the early 1950s he and his firm Law Stead were engaged in constructing the modernist house designed by Peter Womersley at Farnley Hey.[2] Later in the decade he worked with Stephen Gilbert on experimental construction designs.[3] Stead was a professor at Carnegie Mellon University in 1963-4.[4] During the 1970s Stead was a founder of the Centre for Alternatives in Urban Development[4] and wrote a book on "Self-build housing groups and co-operatives: ideas in practice".[5] An archive of Stead's work is held by the Art Gallery in his home town, Huddersfield.[6] References1. ^https://www.theguardian.com/news/2000/jan/05/guardianobituaries3 {{Authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Stead, Peter}}2. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/yorkshire-living/leisure-fashion/homes/design-of-the-times-1-6629814|title=Design of the times|last=Dale|first=Sharon|date=24 May 2014|work=Yorkshire Post|accessdate=7 December 2014}} 3. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.independent.co.uk/news/obituaries/stephen-gilbert-433409.html|title=Stephen Gilbert|last=Westley|first=Hester|date=24 January 2007|work=The Independent|accessdate=7 December 2014}} 4. ^1 {{cite book|title=Built Environment (1978-)|jstor=23284600|publisher=Alexandrine Press {{Subscription required}} |pages=199–200}} 5. ^{{cite web|title=Self-build housing groups and co-operatives : ideas in practice|publisher=OCLC WorldCat|accessdate=7 December 2014|url=http://experimental.worldcat.org/kindredworks/Kindred?sn=16547483}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=http://www2.kirklees.gov.uk/news/onlinenews/newsdesk/fullstory.aspx?id=2063|title=Exhibition with Liadin Cooke - April 17 to June 19|date=5 March 2010|publisher=Kirklees Council|accessdate=7 December 2014}} 6 : 1922 births|1999 deaths|English architects|People from Huddersfield|Recipients of the Distinguished Flying Cross (United Kingdom)|20th-century British architects |
