He has taught as an Assistant Professor at the University of Freiburg. Diplomatic careerIn 2009 he was appointed to serve as Germany's Permanent Representative to the United Nations.[4] Wittig has served twice as the President of the United Nations Security Council, once in July 2011[5] and again in September 2012.[6] Between 2011 and 2012, he headed the Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee.[7] Since joining the German foreign service in 1982, Wittig has served as German Ambassador to Lebanon and to Cyprus.
