In 2008, USA Today estimated that at least 12 colleges and universities allows some form of pet-friendly living arrangements.[1] Students at other institutions have advocated for pet-friendly housing policies.[4] A Kaplan Test Prep survey from 2011 found that 38% of colleges and universities in the United States had student housing where pets were allowed. Pets policies at Eckerd College{{Expand section|date=February 2012}}A long-standing, unusual feature of Eckerd College is that a few residence halls are set aside as "pet dorms" for students wishing to bring small animals to campus. Other special residence halls include "Wellness Houses", that promote healthy living, and service-learning dormitories, for students interested in monthly community service projects. Smoking is not permitted inside Eckerd College dormitories. Pets House at Washington & Jefferson College{{main|Pet House}}Since 2006, Washington & Jefferson College has set aside Monroe Hall as the "Pet House."[5][6] During the 2009-10 school year, 10 students lived in the Pet House; that number jumped to 34 in the 2010-11 school year.[7] The college only permits "family pets" that have been owned by the student's family for greater than one year.[8] Pets policies at Stephens College{{Expand section|date=February 2012}}Stephens College has had a pet-friendly dormitory, called "Pet Central," since 1993.[2] References1. ^1 {{cite news | last = Peters| first = Sharon| title = Pets take the bite out of dorm life| newspaper = USA Today| date = 2008-09-23| url = https://www.usatoday.com/life/lifestyle/2008-09-23-dorm-pets_N.htm| accessdate = 2012-01-21}} 2. ^1 {{cite news| last = Steinberg| first = Jacques| title = Colleges Extend the Welcome Mat to Students’ Pets| newspaper = The New York Times| date = June 5, 2010| url = https://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/06/education/06pets.html| accessdate = February 4, 2012 |archivedate=February 4, 2012| archiveurl=https://www.webcitation.org/65DOtxzez}} 3. ^1 2 3 4 {{cite news | last = Lytle| first = Ryan| title = Bring Your Pet to College| newspaper = U.S. News & World Report| date = May 19, 2011| url = https://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/articles/2011/05/19/bring-your-pet-to-college_print.html| archiveurl=https://www.webcitation.org/65DXraOPJ| archivedate=2012-02-05| accessdate = 2012-02-05}} 4. ^{{cite news | last = Trebach| first =Ben| title = Pets on Campus: Why Not Here?
