It grows to between 0.5 and 2.5 metres in height and produces clusters of starry yellow flowers in the spring.[1] The species was first formally described by English botanist William Jackson Hooker in Thomas Mitchell's Journal of an Expedition into the Interior of Tropical Australia in 1848. The type specimen was collected by Mitchell's expedition near the Maranoa River in Queensland.[2] Subspecies include:
