In 1999 Poncho Nevarez graduated from St. Mary's University School of Law. He won the seat after longtime incumbent Pete Gallego gave it up to make a successful run for the United States House of Representatives. In May 2017, fellow state representative Matt Rinaldi called Immigrations and Customs Enforcement officers on protesters.[1] He claims that Nevárez threatened his life during the incident.
