Prosper Jacob Goumond (December{{nbsp}}10, 1876{{snd}}November{{nbsp}}24, 1954), was a businessman who received the first gaming license issued in Las Vegas.[1]

Personal life

Prosper Jacob "P.J." Goumond was born in Indiana. Goumond was the son of French Canadian immigrant, Albert Goumond (sometimes spelled Groumond). He married Ona Belle Prindle on October 11, 1892 in DeKalb County, Indiana. They had one child, a daughter named Neva M. Goumond, born September 8, 1898 in DeKalb County, Indiana. He divorced his first wife and left her and his daughter behind in Indiana. By 1900, Goumond was living in Nebraska where he met and married his second wife, Gertrude Helen. He and Gertrude had one child, a son named Charles Harold Goumond, born August 28, 1900 in Nebraska. The family left Nebraska and were living in Ogden, Utah in 1911. During World War I the family lived in Ely, White Pine County, Nevada then moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, sometime prior to 1929.

Goumond died in 1954 and is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Las Vegas, Nevada.[1]

Boulder Club

Goumond received the first gaming license issued in Las Vegas.[2] He was a partner in the Boulder Club on Fremont Street; the club was established in 1929. In 1945, Yesco installed first neon sign in Las Vegas at the Boulder Club.[3] A fire on November 25, 1956, caused extensive damage to the building which was by then the oldest gaming establishment in Las Vegas.[4] The Boulder Club closed in 1960 when it was purchased by Benny Binion and became part of the Horseshoe Club.[5][6]

Goumond was also a partner in the Hitchin' Post Motel.[7]

Tule Springs Ranch

On December 7, 1941, Goumond completed the purchase of property at Tule Springs Ranch. During the 1940s he developed the site into a dude ranch that catered to women taking advantage of Nevada's six-week residency requirement for divorce.

Home

The Goumond house, built in 1931, was moved to the Clark County Museum in 1984.[8][9]
