The species was described by Gustav Hartlaub in 1866. It is endemic to the island of Príncipe, where it is restricted to the hilly interior of the southern part.[1] Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. It is threatened by habitat loss.
