Radio BGM is a hospital radio station covering the Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli, playing contemporary and classical music.The station is a non profit organization run by around 15 active volunteers. It's a subsidiary of Llanelli and District League of Hospital Friends, which was established in 1971. The station is currently based at the 'Green' entrance opposite the newly built Costa cafe, it's part of the UK wide Hospital Radio Association (member number 145).

The station provides patients in the hospital with a 24-hour running radio station via speakers positioned all over the hospital and in the wards, the service has been running for over 40 years with large variety of active volunteers taking up roles in presenting, engineering and 'ward walking'. In July 2012 the radio station launched an online streaming service, listeners can listen to the service anywhere in the world via the website.

Fundraising

In 2007 the station was awarded a grant of £13,000 to develop its facilities and provide a series of courses to volunteers. During that year the station began to take part in the Hospital radio association group wide initiative Hospital Broadcasting Week. The project was successful in raising awareness and a total of £209 was made.

Memories Book

Radio BGM was chosen along with the Ty Bryngwyn Hospice to be the recipients of monies raised from the sale of the book Memories, a collection of work by local artist, the late Vernon Hurford.

Voices Of Hope Concert

The concert took place on 18 April 2009.This concert was the culmination of lots of effort and hard work by Radio BGM members and to Cor Meibion Llanelli, Mr Efion Thomas, Mr Richard Allen, Mr David Creel and Miss Hannah Washer.

The money raised from the concert were equally divided by Radio BGM and the Breast Care Unit at the Prince Philip Hospital. the proceeds in total from the evening totalled over £1500.

Online Service

In 2012 Radio BGM was awarded a grant from Communities first trust fund, a scheme funded by the Welsh Government and administered by WCVA.The primary focus of the project was upon developing greater youth participation and broadening peoples understanding of medical treatments and awareness of health campaigns.The project was also made possible with the kind support of the Llanelli Town and Rural Councils.

Many people have gone on from helping in the hospital radio to working full-time with professional broadcasters such as Scarlet FM and The Wave. The local weather and news is also announced on the radio along with thousands of songs ranging in different genres.
