It depicts the conflict between tradition and modern life faced by women belonging to the middle and upper classes, no doubt reflecting the experience of the author herself.[1][2] The book won the Sahitya Akademi Award for English-language works in 1979.[3] Her earlier works include Ramu, A Story of India (1966) and The Life of Keshaw (1969). Both emphasize the importance of education for boys.
