The stadium is primarily set up for athletics, with a running track, but it is also the traditional home of Greenock Juniors Football Club. The stadium is undergoing a £1.7 million refurbishment in preparation for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.[1] The stadium was built in 1958 with a cinder track, upgraded to synthetic in 1992.[2] In season 1959–60 a capacity crowd of 8,200 watched Greenock Juniors lose a Scottish Junior Cup quarter final to Johnstone Burgh.[3] In November 1972 the stadium hosted the first ever official international women's football match to be played in Great Britain. Scotland were defeated 3–2 by England. This was almost exactly a hundred years after the first men's international between the two nations.[4] References1. ^Greenock stadium to get £17 million upgrade stv.tv 14 March 2009 {{Football venues in Scotland}}2. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.runtrackdir.com/details.asp?track=greenock|title=Greenock Ravenscraig Stadium|date=27 December 1999|accessdate=14 January 2012|publisher=UK Running Track Directory|author=Tim Grose}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.inverclyde.gov.uk/news/2009/mar/ravenscraig-track-become-top-athletics-venue/|title=Ravenscraig on track to become top athletics venue|date=10 March 2009|accessdate=14 January 2012|publisher=Inverclyde Council}} 4. ^{{cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=bSseAgPPPoYC&pg=PA126&dq=ravenscraig+stadium&ei=8ukQT9HtNoqMygTdgNWuDw&cd=2#v=onepage&q=ravenscraig%20stadium&f=false|title=Football Nation: Sixty Years of the Beautiful Game|page=126|publisher=bloomsbury|isbn=978-1-4088-0126-0|accessdate=14 January 2012}} 5 : Sports venues in Inverclyde|Athletics (track and field) venues in Scotland|Football venues in Scotland|Sports venues completed in 1958|Greenock |
