History and growthRAW was founded in 2009 by its CEO Heidi Luerra[1][2] and now marketing director and web designer Matthew Klahorst in Los Angeles, California. By 2011, RAW artists was located in 20 cities in the US.[3][4] RAW also has locations in Australia.[5][6][7] and Canada.[8] Business model and controversyRAW artists' business model has been compared to that of multi-level-marketing (MLM) or a pyramid scheme.[1] RAW artists hires sub-contractors and pays them based on the amount of aspiring artists they can sign on to do a show.[1] Artists have to pay RAW artists $300 to have access to display their material at a show with other artists, they are then expected to sell tickets to the event RAW to other people to attempt to pass off the fee.[9] RAW does not provide any further compensation to the artists involved.
