The institute acts as a Center for Higher Studies and Peruvian Research, developing and promoting research mainly related to the areas of humanities, arts and social sciences. To this end, the institute offers researchers and the general public a library specialized in the mentioned fields.[1][2] The institute also is responsible for the Historic house museum Raúl Porras Barrenechea, a building declared a "Historical and Artistic Monument" and "Cultural heritage of Peru" in 1980.[3][4] The location preserves and permanently exhibits works of art, furniture, paintings, sculptures, photographs, family and personal memories of Porras Barrenechea; the Archivo Porras; and the museum of Peruvian writers. It is located in the Miraflores district and is a neighbor of the historic house museum Ricardo Palma, which allows it to develop fully the purpose for which it was founded, being one of the centers of the cultural activity in the country. The house-museum is also the final and most important point of the Literary Route "Mario Vargas Llosa",[5][6] one of the winners of the international competition Walking Visionaires Awards organized by Walk21Vienna in 2015.[7][8] The building of the current institute has been for decades one of the leading intellectual lights of Lima, both during the life and after the death of professor Porras Barrenechea.[9][10] Among the Peruvian intellectuals who have had a significant connection with the house of Porras Barrenechea are: Mario Vargas Llosa, Pablo Macera, Carlos Araníbar, Luis Jaime Cisneros, Hugo Neira, Jorge Basadre, Raúl Ferrero Rebagliati, Félix Álvarez Brun, Jorge Puccinelli, Carlos Alzamora, Miguel Maticorena, René Hooper, Antonio Garrido Aranda, Emilio Vásquez, Luis Loayza, María Rostworowski, and Waldemar Espinoza.[11] References1. ^{{cite web|title=Instituto Raúl Porras Barrenechea|publisher=National University of San Marcos|date=|url=http://vrinvestigacion.unmsm.edu.pe/institutos/no-facultativas/instituto-raul-porras-barrenechea.html|accessdate=August 31, 2010|language=es}} 2. ^{{cite web|title=Blog oficial del Instituto Raúl Porras Barrenechea|publisher=Raúl Porras Barrenechea Institute|date=|url=http://institutoporras.blogspot.com/|accessdate=August 31, 2010|language=es}} 3. ^{{cite web|title=Historia|publisher=Raúl Porras Barrenechea Institute|date=|url=http://www.institutoraulporras.org/historia/|accessdate=July 24, 2015|language=es}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=Patrimonio Cultural|publisher=Miraflores District Council|date=|url=http://www.miraflores.gob.pe/_contenTempl2.asp?idpadre=4951&idcontenido=4968|accessdate=August 13, 2015|language=es|deadurl=yes|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20151222125526/http://www.miraflores.gob.pe/_contenTempl2.asp?idpadre=4951&idcontenido=4968|archivedate=December 22, 2015|df=}} 5. ^{{cite web|title=Miraflores inauguró ruta turística inspirada en obras de Vargas Llosa|publisher=El Comercio|date=|url=http://elcomercio.pe/luces/arte/miraflores-inauguro-ruta-turistica-inspirada-obras-vargas-llosa-noticia-843192|accessdate=July 24, 2015|language=es}} 6. ^{{cite web|title=Ruta Mario Vargas Llosa en Miraflores|publisher=Miraflores District Council|date=|url=http://miratv.pe/2011/03/ruta-mario-vargas-llosa-en-miraflores/|accessdate=July 24, 2015|language=es}} 7. ^{{cite web|title=The Route of Mario Vargas Llosa|publisher=Walk21Vienna|date=|url=http://walk21vienna.com/?dg_voting_submission=the-route-of-mario-vargas-llosa|accessdate=July 24, 2015|language=en}} 8. ^{{cite web|title=Walking Visionaires Awards: Awards Winners|publisher=Walk21Vienna|date=|url=http://walk21vienna.com/visionaries/awards-winners/|accessdate=July 24, 2015|language=en}} 9. ^{{cite web|title=Raúl Porras Barrenechea (1897-1960)|publisher=LimaEasy|date=|url=http://www.limaeasy.com/peru-info/peruvian-personalities-founders/raul-porras-barrenechea-1897-1960-biography|accessdate=July 24, 2015|language=en|deadurl=yes|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20150725014426/http://www.limaeasy.com/peru-info/peruvian-personalities-founders/raul-porras-barrenechea-1897-1960-biography|archivedate=July 25, 2015|df=}} 10. ^{{cite web|title=Hidden jewels of Lima: San Marcos-on-sea|publisher=Peruvian Times|date=|url=http://www.peruviantimes.com/06/11151/11151/|accessdate=July 24, 2015|language=en}} 11. ^{{cite web|title=Raúl Porras Barrenechea|publisher=A la vuelta de la esquina|date=|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65qgeE0imIY|accessdate=July 24, 2015|language=es}} External links{{Commons category|Instituto Raúl Porras Barrenechea}}
