{{Use mdy dates|date=August 2018}}Richard Brody (born 1957/1958)[1] is an American film critic who has written for The New Yorker since 1999. He grew up in Roslyn, New York, and attended Princeton University, receiving a B.A. in Comparative Literature in 1980.[1] He first became interested in films after seeing Godard's Breathless during his freshman year at Princeton. In the early 1980s, after graduating from Princeton, Brody briefly lived in Paris.{{citation needed|date=January 2019}} He is the author of a biography of French New Wave film director Jean-Luc Godard and is writing{{when|date=January 2019}} a book about the New Wave. Before becoming a film critic, he worked on documentaries and made several independent films.[2][3][4] In December 2014, he was made a Chevalier (Knight) in the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions in popularizing French cinema in America.[5]
