The Rider R-6 was the last of the Keith Rider designed racing aircraft of the 1930s.[1] DevelopmentThe R-6 eightball had smooth plywood skins painted light blue with a large eight ball on each side. The actual racing number for the aircraft was 18. It was the last of the Rider racers, as well as the first and last of Rider's new company Union Aircraft Company before World War II intervened, stopping the National Air Races. DesignThe R-6 is a single place, all-wood low-wing monoplane with retractable landing gear.[2] The first wing used was a long thin wing about 20 ft long with hydraulic landing gear.[3] For the 1939 races, a new wing was installed that was nearly elliptical in shape and a light weight worm-gear manually retractable mechanism replaced the hydraulics.[4] Operational history- 1938 Louis W. Greve Trophy Race - The Eight Ball competed against two other Rider designs, the "Firecracker" and the "Jackrabbit". Pilot Joe Jacobson placed third with a speed of 218.478 mph.[5]
- 1938 Thompson Trophy The Eight Ball dropped out in the 27th lap.
- 1939 National Air Races. Pilot George Byers dropped out after a lean mixture burned through a cylinder on tryouts.[6]
On DisplayThe Eight Ball was restored and is on display at the Planes of Fame museum in Chino, California, along with the R-4 Firecracker.[7] In 1991, the R-6 was displayed at the EAA Airshow in Oshkosh, Wisconsin as part of a "Golden Age of Air Racing" program.[8] Specifications (Rider R-6) {{Aircraft specs |ref=Sport Aviation |prime units?=kts |genhide= |crew=1 |capacity= |length m= |length ft=19 |length in= |length note= |span m= |span ft=18 |span in=5 |span note= |upper span m= |upper span ft= |upper span in= |upper span note= |mid span m= |mid span ft= |mid span in= |mid span note= |lower span m= |lower span ft= |lower span in= |lower span note= |swept m= |swept ft= |swept in= |swept note= |dia m= |dia ft= |dia in= |dia note= |width m= |width ft= |width in= |width note= |height m= |height ft= |height in= |height note= |wing area sqm= |wing area sqft= |wing area note= |swept area sqm= |swept area sqft= |swept area note= |volume m3= |volume ft3= |volume note= |aspect ratio= |airfoil= |empty weight kg= |empty weight lb= |empty weight note= |gross weight kg= |gross weight lb= |gross weight note= |max takeoff weight kg= |max takeoff weight lb= |max takeoff weight note= |fuel capacity= |lift kg= |lift lb= |lift note= |more general=
