Robert Plunkett (1752–1815) was the first President of Georgetown University.{{sfnm |1a1=Curran |1y=1993 |1p=32 |2a1=Currier |2y=1890 |2p=60}}

An alumnus of English College, Douai, Plunkett became a Jesuit four years before the congregation's suppression.{{sfn|Curran|1993|p=32}} He was later ordained to the priesthood and sailed to the United States in 1790 as a missionary, alongside the priest Charles Neale{{sfn|Curran|1993|p=32}} (whose two brothers, Francis Neale and the Leonard Neale, would eventually become Presidents of Georgetown).{{citation needed|date=January 2018}} He was posted at a plantation in White Marsh, Maryland, before being named to the presidency of Georgetown University by John Carroll, the university's founder.{{sfn|Curran|1993|pp=32, 204–205}} In 1791, Carroll persuaded the reluctant Plunkett to accept the position.{{sfn|Curran|1993}}

Plunkett oversaw the division of the university into three parts: "college", "preparatory", and "elementary".{{sfn|O'Neill|Williams|2003|p=13}} After eighteen months in office, Plunkett stepped down as the President of Georgetown University {{citation needed span |date=January 2018 |text=and was succeeded by Robert Molyneux}} in 1793.{{sfn|O'Neill|Williams|2003|p=13}}
