Her research focuses on comparative vertebrate physiology, energetics, cancer biology, and aging. She has worked with marsupials, mole-rats, tenrecs, bats, subterranean mammals, and primates. Her best known work involves exceptional aging—specifically, why naked mole-rats[3][4][5] live for so much longer than other rodents. Her lab has investigated theories of aging including oxidative damage theory, the advanced glycation end product theory, and the telomere theory.[3] In a 2010 interview following the death of Old Man, a naked mole rat believed to be 32 years old, Buffenstein said, "In many ways, [naked mole rats] confound what scientists think they know about how diseases progress and why living things age."[6] References1. ^1 {{Cite web |url=http://www.sci.ccny.cuny.edu/~rfr/buf.htm# |title=Archived copy |access-date=2014-08-07 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140808055919/http://www.sci.ccny.cuny.edu/~rfr/buf.htm# |archive-date=2014-08-08 |dead-url=yes |df= }} {{authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Bufenstein, Rochelle}}{{US-biologist-stub}}2. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.calicolabs.com/team-member/rochelle-shelley-buffenstein/|title=Staff page for Rochelle Buffenstein at Calico Labs|last=|first=|date=|website=|archive-url=|archive-date=|dead-url=|access-date=2017-04-09}} 3. ^1 2 {{cite web|url=http://barshopinstitute.uthscsa.edu/main/facultystaff/barshopfaculty/u25|title=Barshop Institute Faculty {{!}} Barshop Institute|last=Antonio|first=State of Texas,University of Texas Health Science Center at San|website=barshopinstitute.uthscsa.edu|access-date=2018-01-03}} 4. ^{{Cite web |url=http://physiology.uthscsa.edu/faculty-profile/36# |title=Archived copy |access-date=2014-08-07 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140808073414/http://physiology.uthscsa.edu/faculty-profile/36# |archive-date=2014-08-08 |dead-url=yes |df= }} 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://bionews-tx.com/news/news-tags/dr-rochelle-buffenstein/|title=Dr. Rochelle Buffenstein {{!}} BioNews Texas|website=BioNews Texas|language=en-US|access-date=2017-10-16}} 6. ^{{Cite news|url=http://www.oaoa.com/news/article_b4b36f78-af7b-5e16-ba60-3750c5071c76.html?mode=jqm|title=AP: 32-year-old rat dies|work=Odessa American|access-date=2018-01-03}} 6 : Year of birth missing (living people)|Living people|University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio faculty|City College of New York faculty|University of Cape Town alumni|Place of birth missing (living people) |
