}}Ronan Maher (born 9 October 1995) is an Irish hurler who plays as a left wing-back for the Tipperary senior team.[1]

Born in Thurles, County Tipperary, Maher first arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of sixteen when he first linked up with the Tipperary minor team before later joining the under-21 side. He made his senior debut during the 2014 Waterford Crystal Cup. Maher subsequently became a regular member of the starting fifteen and has won one Munster medal.

At club level Maher is a one-time Munster medallist with Thurles Sarsfields. In addition to this he has also won four championship medal.

Maher's brother, Pádraic, is also an All-Ireland medallist with Tipperary.[2]

Playing career

Club

Maher was still eligible for the minor grade when he was added to the senior panel of the Thurles Sarsfields team in 2012. He was a non-playing substitute that year as Sarsfields won the championship following a 1-21 to 2-15 defeat of Drom-Inch in the decider.[3] Maher later claimed a Munster medal on the field of play when he was introduced as a substitute during a thrilling 1-21 to 1-16 defeat of De La Salle in one of the games of the year.[4]

After surrendering their titles the following year, Thurles Sarsfields were back in the final again in 2014. A slow start had a detrimental effect on opponents Loughmore-Castleiney, as Sarsfields powered to a 2-22 to 3-11 victory.[5] It was Maher's first championship medal on the field of play.

Inter-county

Maher first played for Tipperary as a member of the minor team on 2 May 2012 in a 6-21 to 0-11 Munster quarter-final trouncing of Kerry.[6] He later won a Munster medal following a 1-16 to 1-12 defeat of Clare.[7] On 9 September 2012 Tipperary faced Dublin in the All-Ireland decider. In a thrilling contest, Tipperary looked on course to take the title, however, a brace of Paul Winters points for Dublin secured a draw. The replay three weeks later was much more conclusive with Maher collecting an All-Ireland medal following a 2-18 to 1-11 victory.[8]

On 12 January 2014 Maher made his competitive debut for the Tipperary senior team in a 3-20 to 0-5 defeat of the Limerick Institute of Technology in the Waterford Crystal Cup.[9] He later claimed a winners' medal in that competition as Tipperary defeated Clare by 4-22 to 3-11 in the decider.[10]

Maher won a Munster medal in 2015 following a 0-21 to 0-16 defeat of Waterford.[11]

On 4 September 2016, playing alongside his brother Padraic, Maher won his first All-Ireland Senior hurling title when Tipperary defeated Kilkenny in the final by 2-29 to 2-20.[12][13]
