释义 |
InstrumentationThe work is scored for seven players:
At certain points in the work, the wind players and the pianist are also required to play percussion instruments. StructureThe work consists of three parts, each representing an element of the Passion story:
Inspiration for the composition was derived from Northern Renaissance art, in particular the works of Hieronymus Bosch and Matthias Grunewald. The approach of these artists to the subject of the Crucifixion appealed to Rouse because they conveyed the anguish of the Passion more emphatically than their Italian counterparts.[3][4] Each part of the work can therefore be interpreted as a panel from a triptych altarpiece.[1] Material in the composition is developed in a circular fashion, hence the 'wheel' concept: this notion was also inspired by the 'Rota Fortunae' of Orff's Carmina Burana.[1] References1. ^1 2 "{{cite book|last=McKinnon|first=Arlon|title=Passion Wheels (CD notes)|publisher=Koch International Classics 3-7468-2|year=2000}} {{Italic title}}{{Christopher Rouse}}{{Carl Orff|state=collapsed}}{{authority control}}2. ^{{cite web |last=Gutman |first=David |title=Rouse Passion Wheels: The Music of Christopher Rouse |work=Gramophone |date=December 2000 |url=http://www.gramophone.co.uk/review/rouse-passion-wheels-the-music-of-christopher-rouse |accessdate=May 15, 2015}} 3. ^Rouse, Christopher.
