It grows in southern and central Europe and in southwestern Asia from Portugal to Iran, north as far as Germany, Poland, and Ukraine.[1][2] There are a few reports of the species sparingly naturalized in the State of West Virginia in the eastern United States.[1] Some sources consider R. tomentosus to be the same species as R. canescens.[2][3][4] The genetics of Rubus is extremely complex, so that it is difficult to decide on which groups should be recognized as species. There are many rare species with limited ranges such as this. Further study is suggested to clarify the taxonomy.[5] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://bonap.net/MapGallery/County/Rubus%20tomentosus.png|title=Biota of North America Program 2014 county distribution map}} 2. ^1 Altervista Flora Italiana, Rovo tomentoso, Rubus canescens DC. includes photos and European distribution map 3. ^1 Tela Botanica, Rubus canescens DC. in French 4. ^Institució Catalana d’Història Natural, Zarza cana (Rubus canescens) in Castillian Spanish, with photos 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=1&taxon_id=128837|title=Flora of North America, Rubus Linnaeus, 1754.
