It is located in the west of the oblast. The area of the district is {{convert|1505.02|km2|sp=us}}.[1] Its administrative center is the town of Rylsk.[2] Population: {{ru-census2010|33,158|;}} 40,714 (2002 Census);[4] {{su-census1989|47,012|.}} The population of Rylsk accounts for 47.3% of the district's total population. AttractionsIn the environs of Rylsk, two manors are of interest to the student of Russian history. The village of Ivanovskoye, {{convert|20|km|sp=us}} east of Rylsk, has a summer residence of Ukrainian hetman Ivan Mazepa, while Maryino, slightly to the west, used to be a seat of the princely house of Boryatinsky, who in 1815-1816 built a palace and extensive English park there.
