He was known as Sajjad Afghani, due to his participation in Soviet-Afghan War .[1] Early lifeHe born in the village of Baibakh, Rawalakot, Poonch, Kashmir.[2] Soviet Afghan WarSajjad Afghani joined the militancy under the banner of Jamat e Islami in the 1980s. He was well trained and remained involved in Soviet Afghan war. He stayed in Afghanistan till 1989.[3] Commander in ChiefIn 1991 he becomes Commander in Chief of Harkat Ul Ansar in Srinagar. In June 1994 he was arrested along with Molana Masood Azhar by Indian Military. He was detained by 15 Crops headquarter at Jammu.[4] Lt. Gen. Arjun Ray, then Brigadier General Staff (BGS), described Afghani, a frail but visibly tough militant who had fought the Russians, as the "biggest catch" given his importance in the militant circles.[5] DeathAccording to Indian sources, Sajjad Afghani was killed during an unsuccessful attempt of escape from the high security Kotbalwal Jail in 1999.
