It is the centerpiece of the recently created Salar del Huasco National Park and was designated Ramsar Site 874 on 2 December 1996.[2] The area has a significant population of flamingos.[2] The salt flat is probably bordered by a fault on its western side, and a river delta forms much of its northern edge; it is now crisscrossed by stream channels. In the Pleistocene the salt flat was covered by a lake that was identified through its clay and diatomite sediments and which has left well preserved shorelines and terraces.[3] References1. ^{{Cite web|title=Salar del Huasco|website=Ramsar Sites Information Service|url=https://rsis.ramsar.org/ris/874|accessdate=25 April 2018}} {{coord|20|18|S|68|50|W|display=title}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Huasco}}{{Tarapacá-geo-stub}}2. ^1 {{cite web |url=http://www.ramsar.org/cda/en/ramsar-documents-list-annotated-ramsar-16479/main/ramsar/1-31-218%5E16479_4000_0__ |title=The Annotated Ramsar List: Chile |publisher=Ramsar |accessdate=7 May 2012}} 3. ^{{Cite journal|last=Stoertz|first=George E.|last2=Ericksen|first2=George Edward|date=1974|title=Geology of salars in Northern Chile|url=https://pubs.er.usgs.gov/publication/pp811|journal=Professional Paper|language=en|doi=10.3133/pp811|issn=2330-7102}} 5 : Salt flats of Chile|Ramsar sites in Chile|National parks of Chile|Protected areas of Tarapacá Region|Landforms of Tarapacá Region |
