}}Salman bin Sultan Al Saud (born 1976) is the former assistant secretary general of the Saudi Arabian National Security Council for intelligence and security affairs as well as the former deputy defense minister. He is a member of House of Saud.[1]

Early life and education

Prince Salman was born in Dhahran in 1976.[2] His father is late Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz, former Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia.[3] Salman bin Sultan has a bachelor's degree in military sciences and attended several courses in security and intelligence matters.[3]

Career

Salman bin Sultan began his career as a lieutenant in the Saudi royal air defense force.[3] He later worked as platoon commander in an air defense unit.[4] Then he served as a military attaché with the rank of first lieutenant at the Saudi Embassy in Washington, D.C. during the Prince Bandar's tenure as ambassador to the United States at the beginning of the 2000s.[5][6] His tenure lasted until 2008.[7] Prince Salman served as the assistant secretary general of the National Security Council (NSC) for intelligence and security affairs.[8][9] He was promoted to the excellent rank in the post in August 2011.[10] During his tenure until 6 August 2013 he closely worked with his elder half-brother Bandar bin Sultan, who headed the NSC in addition to the General Intelligence Presidency.[11] During his tenure Prince Salman was one of three Saudi officials who were instrumental in implementing the Syria policy of Saudi Arabia along with Foreign Minister Prince Saud and Prince Bandar.[12][13]

Prince Salman was appointed deputy defense minister at the rank of minister on 6 August 2013, replacing Fahd bin Abdullah Al Saud in the post.[14][15] He was relieved of his duty upon his request on 14 May 2014, and was replaced by Khalid bin Bandar Al Saud as deputy defense minister.[16][17]

Prince Salman is also deputy secretary general of Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Foundation.[18][19]

Personal life

Prince Salman is married to Falwa bint Ahmed bin Abdulaziz, the daughter of his uncle and former Minister of Interior, Prince Ahmed bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.[5][20]
