He was recruited with pick 45 in the 2009 national draft from Xavier College and the Oakleigh Chargers.[1] AFL careerShaw's first two seasons in the AFL, 2010 and 2011, were ravaged by multiple injuries that prevented him from playing consecutive SANFL games until late in 2011. After a strong 2012 pre-season, Shaw finally made his AFL debut in round 4 against {{AFL GWS}}, and impressed with 13 possessions, three marks and six rebound 50s.[2] Despite further injuries including an unlucky eye injury mid-season and a hamstring injury in Adelaide's Semi FInal win over {{AFL Fre}},[3][4] Shaw established himself as a tall defender in tandem with Daniel Talia when fit, earning an AFL Rising Star nomination in round 21.[5] During the season he signed a two-year contract extension with Adelaide.[6] Injuries continued to haunt Shaw over the next few seasons. In early 2013, he suffered a grade-two hamstring tear keeping him out of football for two months.[7] He returned to play two more AFL games late in the year. Shaw then played in five of the first seven games in 2014 before again being struck down by hamstring issues, returning for one more game in round 21.[8] At the end of the season he underwent major hamstring surgery to correct his chronic issues, requiring a six-month rehabilitation period that ruled him out of the start of the 2015 season.[9] He made his return via the SANFL and played two more AFL games for Adelaide late in the season.[8] In November 2016, he retired from AFL football citing ongoing concussion issues.[10] He was, however, re-drafted by the Adelaide in the 2017 rookie draft in an administrative decision related to his ongoing welfare.[11] In April 2019 he launched legal action against the Adelaide Football Club and its medical staff due to the treatment of the injury that ended his career.[12] StatisticsStatistics are correct to end of 2015 season[13]{{AFL player statistics legend}}{{AFL player statistics start}} |- style="background:#eaeaea;" | 2012 | style="text-align:center" | {{AFL Ade}} | 34 || 14 || 0 || 1 || 134 || 31 || 165 || 56 || 23 || 0.0 || 0.1 || 9.6 || 2.2 || 11.8 || 4.0 || 1.6 |- | 2013 | style="text-align:center" | {{AFL Ade}} | 34 || 2 || 0 || 0 || 15 || 6 || 21 || 7 || 5 || 0.0 || 0.0 || 7.5 || 3.0 || 10.5 || 3.5 || 2.5 |- style="background:#eaeaea;" | 2014 | style="text-align:center" | {{AFL Ade}} | 34 || 6 || 0 || 0 || 39 || 26 || 65 || 18 || 14 || 0.0 || 0.0 || 6.5 || 4.3 || 10.8 || 3.0 || 2.3 |- | 2015 | style="text-align:center" | {{AFL Ade}} | 34 || 2 || 0 || 0 || 12 || 9 || 21 || 7 || 2 || 0.0 || 0.0 || 6.0 || 4.5 || 10.5 || 3.5 || 1.0 |- class="sortbottom" | Career | 24 | 0 | 1 | 200 | 72 | 272 | 88 | 44 | 0.0 | 0.0 | 8.3 | 3.0 | 11.3 | 3.7 | 1.8 |} References1. ^{{cite news|date=26 November 2009|title=2009 AFL draft picks round-by-round|url=http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/afl-draft-picks-round-by-round/story-fn4hg9de-1225804305210|newspaper=Herald Sun}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.afc.com.au/news/2012-04-21/shaws-small-step|title=Shaw's 'small' step|last1=Gill|first1=Katrina|date=21 April 2012|website=AFC.com.au|publisher=Adelaide Football Club|access-date=25 June 2016}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.news.com.au/sport/afl/eye-bleeding-floors-adelaide-defender-sam-shaw/story-fnelctok-1226428413133|title=Eye bleeding floors Adelaide defender Sam Shaw|date=17 July 2012|website=news.com.au|access-date=25 June 2016}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.news.com.au/sport/afl/live-hq-crows-v-freo/story-fnelctok-1226474458924|title=Adelaide set to play Hawthorn after edging Fremantle at AAMI Stadium|date=15 September 2012|website=news.com.au|access-date=25 June 2016}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.afl.com.au/news/2012-08-21/shaw-defence-wins-plaudits|title=Shaw defence wins plaudits|last1=Holmesby|first1=Luke|date=21 August 2012|website=AFL.com.au|publisher=Australian Football League|access-date=21 August 2012}} 6. ^{{cite news|last=Rucci|first=Michelangelo|date=27 July 2012|title=Young defender Sam Shaw signs new deal with Adelaide Crows|url=http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/young-defender-sam-shaw-signs-new-crows-deal/story-e6frf9jf-1226436964187|newspaper=AdelaideNow}} 7. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-04-11/shaw-hamstrung-for-crows|title=Shaw hamstrung for Crows|date=11 April 2013|website=AFL.com.au|publisher=Australian Football League|access-date=25 June 2016}} 8. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.afc.com.au/player-profile/Sam-Shaw|title=Sam Shaw - AFC.com.au|website=AFC.com.au|publisher=Adelaide Football Club}} 9. ^{{cite news|last=Capel|first=Andrew|date=14 November 2014|title=Crows defender Sam Shaw undergoes “unusual’’ surgery in bid to help save his AFL career|url=http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/afl/teams/adelaide/crows-defender-sam-shaw-undergoes-unusual-surgery-in-bid-to-help-save-his-afl-career/news-story/dc6be1a621e35bc80d4e6e734d4550eb|newspaper=The Advertiser}} 10. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-11-09/concussion-takes-toll-as-crow-retires-at-just-25|title=Concussion takes toll as Crow retires at just 25|date=9 November 2016|work=AFL.com.au|publisher=Bigpond|accessdate=9 November 2016}} 11. ^{{cite web|last1=Burtenshaw|first1=David|title=Jarman joins Crows|url=http://www.afc.com.au/news/2016-11-28/jarman-joins-crows|publisher=Adelaide Football Club|accessdate=28 November 2016|date=28 November 2016}} 12. ^{{cite web|author=WWOS Staff|title=Former Adelaide Crow Sam Shaw sues club over premature concussion retirement|url=https://wwos.nine.com.au/afl/ex-adelaide-crow-sam-shaw-sues-club-over-concussion-retirement/deb60c3d-9454-4ba1-bf8b-fc0d8fd133f0|publisher=Nine News|accessdate=3 April 2019|date=3 April 2019}} 13. ^{{cite web|url=http://afltables.com/afl/stats/players/S/Sam_Shaw.html|title=AFL Tables - Sam Shaw statistics|website=AFL Tables}} External links{{Commons category}}
