The Anne & Gordon Samstag Museum of Art was established c. 1977 as the "College Gallery" of the South Australian College of Advanced Education (SACAE) at its Underdale campus. Over the next 30 years it had several names and locations.[1] Since October 2007 it has been the Samstag Museum of Art, located in the Hawke Building of the city west campus of the University of South Australia (UniSA). The museum is named in honour of Anne & Gordon Samstag, "two distinguished American benefactors to Australian culture, whose remarkable bequest provides opportunities for Australian artists to study overseas."[2] The Anne & Gordon Samstag International Visual Arts ScholarshipsGordon Samstag was an American artist who taught at the South Australian School of Art from 1961 to 1970.[3][4] Born in New York on 21 June 1906, he was educated at the New York Art Students League and the Académie Colarossi in Paris. His art is widely displayed in the US, including murals in now heritage-listed buildings in Scarsdale, New York and Reidsville, North Carolina. The Samstags moved to Florida in 1976 where Anne died in 1987, and Gordon in 1990.[5] The Scholarships were established in 1991 through a bequest from their estate. "Each scholarship includes, for twelve months of overseas study, a tax-exempt stipend equivalent to US$48,000, plus return airfares and institutional fees.[4] From zero to a dozen scholarships have been awarded each year.[6] Recipients include Megan Walch (1994), John Kelly (1995), and Darren Siwes (2002), Ruth Marshall, Susan Fereday, Kathy Temin, Julie Gough, Nicholas Folland, Shaun Gladwell, Monte Masi, Sasha Grbich and Darren Siwes.[7][8] References1. ^{{cite web |title= History of the Museum |work= Anne & Gordon Samstag Museum of Art |url= http://w3.unisa.edu.au/samstagmuseum/about/history.asp |publisher= University of South Australia }} 2. ^{{cite web |title= About the Museum |work= Anne & Gordon Samstag Museum of Art |url= http://w3.unisa.edu.au/samstagmuseum/about/default.asp |publisher= University of South Australia }} 3. ^The South Australian School of Art is now named the School of Art, Architecture and Design, and is a part of the University of South Australia. 4. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.unisa.edu.au/Business-community/Samstag-Museum/|title=The University of South Australia: Home|website=Unisa.edu.au|accessdate=21 September 2018}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.unisa.edu.au/Business-community/Samstag-Museum/Samstag-Scholarships/The-Samstag-story/|title=The University of South Australia: Home|website=Unisa.edu.au|accessdate=21 September 2018}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.unisa.edu.au/Business-community/Samstag-Museum/Samstag-Scholarships/The-Samstag-alumni/|title=The University of South Australia: Home|website=Unisa.edu.au|accessdate=21 September 2018}} 7. ^{{cite book |last1=Wolfe |first1=Ross |last2=DeLong |first2=Lea Rosson |title=The Samstag legacy : an artist's bequest |date=2016 |publisher=Anne & Gordon Samstag Museum of Art, University of South Australia |location=Adelaide, South Australia |isbn=9780994335081 |page=328 |url=https://trove.nla.gov.au/version/231516137 |language=English}} 8. ^{{cite web |title=The University of South Australia: Home |url=https://www.unisa.edu.au/Business-community/Samstag-Museum/Samstag-Scholarships/The-Samstag-alumni/ |website=www.unisa.edu.au |language=en-AU}} External links
