It was built from 1994 to 1995, during the rule of Saparmurat Turkmenbashi. It was erected in memory of the soldiers, defenders of the fortress Geokdepe (see Battle of Geok Tepe). It is a prominent landmark in Gökdepe with its four minarets.[1] HistoryThe project has developed Ashgabat architect Kakajan Durdyyev. The mosque was opened in 1995 and named in honor of the President of Turkmenistan Saparmurat Niyazov pilgrimage to Mecca during the Hajj in 1992. The mosque was built by the French company Bouygues in one year.[2] In 2008, the mosque has revolutionized Turkish firm «SUR Turizm Insaat Tijaret ve sanayi LTD STI». Contractor has design and construction of facilities for the rite of "sadaqah" for 1000 and the museum building and landscaping of the adjacent territory. The cost of reconstruction - $34 million.[3] OverviewThe mosque have a capacity for 8000 people. Its main characteristics are its main blue dome which is surrounded by four lower blue half domes. Its four minarets are 63 meters high to represent the age at which the Prophet Muhammad died.[4] See also
