Sarah Wesam Aboufasha, better known by her pseudonym; Sarah Fasha (Arabic: سارة فاشا) is an Egyptian American comedic YouTube personality, vlogger, motivational speaker, and winner of Miss Egypt in the Queen of the Universe Pageant 2013,[1][2][3]. She is known mostly for her viral success in Egypt after winning her pageant title in the United States.

Early Life

Fasha is a first generation Egyptian-American born in Los Angeles, CA. Fasha belongs to an artistic family with her grandfather being Taher AbouFasha[4] (Arabic طاهر أبو فاشا) who is an iconic Egyptian writer and poet. He is best known for his dramatic writing for radio, having written over 800 episodes of Arabian Nights (Arabic ألف ليلة وليلة) of which is popular in the Middle East during Ramadan until today. He also wrote songs for the singing legend Umm Kulthum (Arabic أم كلثوم) as well as having written for television shows such as "Fawazir Ramadan" (Arabic فوازير رمضان) (translates as Ramadan puzzles'’).

After graduating from Newport Harbor High School in Newport Beach, CA, Fasha enlisted in the United States Navy at only 17 with her parents permission. Fasha worked as a Naval Intelligence Officer during her short four year enlistment. During that time, Fasha sustained many injuries including a pubic ramus stress fracture during bootcamp in Great Lakes, IL. [5] Fasha has also stated that she has been a victim of Military Sexual Trauma (MST) and has suffered Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) because of the sexual harassment in the military.[6]

Queen of the Universe Pageant 2013

After Fasha participated in the 2013 Queen of the Universe Pageant as Miss Egypt,[7] she came under attack on social media, with some people claiming that Fasha had inappropriately stated she was winner of the Miss Egypt title for 2013. Fasha publicly clarified that she never claimed this title on behalf of Egypt's official pageant, adding that Egypt did not even hold a Miss Egypt Pageant in 2013. She said she had stated from the beginning that she was Miss Egypt from the Queen of the Universe Pageant in Beverly Hills.

She was criticized for having served in the U.S. military, not being beautiful enough for a beauty pageant, and not being "Egyptian enough". "Beauty pageants aren't just about beauty, they are also about morals, ethics, accomplishments and more," she said in response. She was also quoted as saying she wanted to be "a voice for Egyptian women and children, as well as for other countries around the world."[8][9][10]

TEDx Talk

In January 2015, Fasha was invited to be the headlining motivational speaker for the [https://www.ted.com/tedx/events/12876 TEDx Benha], Egypt. She gave a talk titled “Who’s Qualified To Judge You & Why You Probably Shouldn’t Care.” The speech asks people to question the validity of someone's advice, especially when it comes to discouragement when following ones dreams by taking a practical, non-emotional approach. One should ask themselves if the person who is advising them in their lives is considered a "qualified, reliable and trustworthy source” aka person, opposed to someone who should probably be disregarded due to their lack of knowledge and/or experience on the given situation.[11][12]

Fasha proposed that people should consider the example of being asked to write a research paper for school. "We are taught to cite our resources," she stated, "with that said we must cite legitimate, reliable sources in order to get credit for our research assignment. If we were to credit social media for example, then that would receive no credit for our research paper due to it being considered an unreliable and opinionative source." She encouraged that having this “qualifying” people mindset when accepting advice will help put many situations in perspective and limit ones confusion when it comes to making a decision and the influences they choose to accept.[13]

Fasha also used the example from her own personal life when people said she was not “beautiful” enough to be Miss Egypt 2013 in the Queen of the Universe Pageant. She asked, “How do they know? Not only have I already achieved what they are denying me of, but more importantly, have they ever been in a pageant? Have they ever ran a pageant? Were these individuals ever judges for any pageants? Can they even spell pageant?!?.” Which she claims has helped her when she was attacked because of her looks and intelligence.[14][15]
