Built in 1936, the structure is both listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a designated city landmark.[3][4] The bridge was designed by city engineer Clark Eldridge. It replaced a timber-truss span that had been erected in 1916.[5] The funds were provided by the federal Public Works Administration and by local gas-tax and highway funds. The rigid frame created by the concrete box cells made the structure 60 percent longer than any such bridge previously constructed.[6][7] The graffiti artwork underneath the bridge has received praise in C-Monster's art blog and from a critic with the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.[8] References{{commons category|Schmitz Park Bridge}}1. ^{{cite web|title=Landmarks and Designation|publisher=City of Seattle|url=http://www.seattle.gov/neighborhoods/preservation/landmarks_listing.htm|accessdate=2013-03-05}} {{Bridges of Seattle}}{{National Register of Historic Places}}{{Washington-NRHP-stub}}{{Washington-bridge-struct-stub}}2. ^{{NRISref|version=2010a}} 3. ^{{cite book|title=National Register of Historic Places; Annual Listing of Historic Properties (Part II)|date=March 1, 1983|publisher=National Park Service|page=8669|url=http://www.cr.nps.gov/nr/listings/Weekly_List_FR-March-1-1983-listingyear1982.pdf}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=Individual Landmarks|url=http://www.seattle.gov/neighborhoods/preservation/s.htm|publisher=City of Seattle Department of Neighborhoods|accessdate=March 25, 2011}} 5. ^{{cite book|title=West Seattle|year=2010|publisher=Arcadia Publishing|isbn=978-0-7385-8133-0|page=55}} 6. ^{{cite web|last=Long|first=Priscilla|title=Schmitz Park Bridge in West Seattle is completed in December 1936.|url=http://www.historylink.org/index.cfm?DisplayPage=output.cfm&file_id=8438|work=HistoryLink.org Online Encyclopedia of Washington State History|date=December 23, 2007|accessdate=March 1, 2011}} 7. ^{{cite journal|last=Whipple|first=Harvey|journal=Concrete|year=1937|volume=47|page=340}} 8. ^{{cite news|title=Blooming Concrete|url=http://blog.seattlepi.com/art/2008/05/14/blooming-concrete/|accessdate=March 27, 2011|newspaper=Seattle Post-intelligencer|date=May 14, 2008}} 9 : Art Deco architecture in Washington (state)|Bridges in Seattle|Bridges completed in 1936|Road bridges on the National Register of Historic Places in Washington (state)|National Register of Historic Places in Seattle|Landmarks in Seattle|Road bridges in Washington (state)|1936 establishments in Washington (state)|Concrete bridges in the United States |
