Each plant grows from a small bulb, with 2-3 strap shaped leaves and pale blue flowers with darker veins, blooming in early spring or late winter. Plants reach {{convert|5|to|15|cm|in|abbr=on}} high and approximately {{convert|5|cm|in|abbr=on}} wide.[1][2][3] S. mischtschenkoana[4] and the cultivar 'Tubergeniana'[5] have gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
