The award was launched in 2012 by the Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA) in partnership with Creative Scotland.[1] An initial longlist of 20 albums is chosen each year by collecting votes from 100 nominators. This is then reduced to a shortlist of 10 by a mixture of public vote and a judging panel.[2] The winner receives £20,000, with the 9 runners-up receiving £1,000 each.[3] Past winners
