It is located in the northwest of the oblast. The area of the district is {{convert|2900|km2|sp=us}}.[3] Its administrative center is the rural locality (a selo) of Sharlyk.[4] Population: 18,032 (2010 Census);[5] {{ru-census|p2002=22,128|p1989=23,797}} The population of Sharlyk accounts for 42.0% of the total district's population.[5] Famous natives
