It is located in the center of the krai, and borders with Tungokochensky District in the north, Nerchinsky District in the east, Mogoytuysky District in the south, and with Karymsky District in the west. The area of the district is {{convert|6100|km2|sp=us}}.[2] Its administrative center is the town of Shilka.[3] Population: {{ru-census2010|43,194|;}} 47,453 (2002 Census);[5] {{su-census1989|58,279|.}} The population of Shilka accounts for 32.3% of the district's total population.
