Clarke, concerning a future sub-mariner who works in the field of aquaculture, farming the seas. The story includes the capture of a sea monster similar to a kraken. It is based on a short story of the same name that was published in April 1954, in Argosy magazine. The short story was later featured in Tales from Planet Earth and Frederik Pohl's Star Science Fiction No.3. Plot and settingsA lengthy portion of this novel takes place on an extrapolated Heron Island, Australia. Towards the end of the novel, the main character visits the ancient Sri Lankan underwater city of Anuradhapura. ReceptionGalaxy reviewer Floyd C. Gale praised the novel, describing it as "as fresh and bright as dawn on a tropic sea."[2] He later called the short story a "super duper topnotcher".[3]References1. ^Publication: The Deep Range, The Internet Speculative Fiction Database 2. ^"[https://archive.org/stream/galaxymagazine-1957-10/Galaxy_1957_10#page/n123/mode/2up Galaxy's 5 Star Shelf]", Galaxy Science Fiction, October 1957, p.122 3. ^{{Cite magazine |last=Gale |first=Floyd C. |author= |last2= |first2= |date=August 1961 |title=Galaxy's 5 Star Shelf |department= |url=https://archive.org/stream/Galaxy_v19n06_1961-08#page/n77/mode/1up |magazine=Galaxy Science Fiction |pages=154-157 |type=}} Sources
