词条 | Sir Joseph Hood Memorial Wood |
释义 |
HistoryThe area was part of an estate which belonged to Merton Priory at the time of the Reformation. In around 1600 it was bought by the Garth family, who were Lords of the Manor of Merton. In the middle of the nineteenth century Richard Garth planted the area which is now the nature reserve with oak trees, probably as a hunting covert. In 1931 Merton and Morden Urban District Council purchased part of the estate, which became the playing fields and wood. It is named after Sir Joseph Hood, a former MP and Mayor of Wimbledon.[4][5] EcologyThe wood is bordered by the Beverley Brook, which forms the boundary with the London Borough of Kingston. The site has a wide range of birds, such as nuthatches and treecreepers, and trees, including mature oaks which date to the nineteenth century planting. The diverse shrub layer has species such as Midland hawthorn and ransoms which probably date to an ancient hedgerow predating the wood.[1][3] AccessAccess is from the playing fields off Marina Avenue.[1] {{commons category|Sir Joseph Hood Memorial Wood}}References1. ^1 2 {{cite web|url= http://www.lnr.naturalengland.org.uk/Special/lnr/lnr_details.asp?C=0&N=joseph&ID=406|title= Sir Joseph Hood Memorial Wood|series=Local Nature Reserves|publisher=Natural England| date = 7 March 2013 |accessdate= 6 April 2014}} {{coord|51.3897|-0.2394|type:landmark_region:GB-GRE|display=title}}{{LNRs in Greater London}}2. ^{{cite web|url=http://magic.defra.gov.uk/MagicMap.aspx?startTopic=Designations&activelayer=lnrIndex&query=REF_CODE%3D%271009771%27 |title=Map of Sir Joseph Hood Memorial Wood|series=Local Nature Reserves|publisher=Natural England| accessdate= 6 April 2014}} 3. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://www.gigl.org.uk/online/site-Details.aspx?sID=MeBI05&sType=sinc|title=Sir Joseph Hood Memorial Playing Fields Wood|publisher=Greenspace Information for Greater London|year=2013|accessdate= 6 April 2014}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.merton.gov.uk/environment/openspaces/parks/parks_in_the_morden_area/sir_joseph_hood_memorial_playing_fields/sir_joseph_hood_memorial_playing_fields_history.htm|title=Sir Joseph Hood Memorial Playing Field history|publisher=London Borough of Merton|accessdate= 6 April 2014}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.londongardensonline.org.uk/gardens-online-record.asp?ID=MER053|title=Sir Joseph Hood Memorial Playing Fields and Memorial Wood|publisher=London Parks and Gardens Trust|accessdate= 6 April 2014}} 2 : Local nature reserves in Greater London|Nature reserves in the London Borough of Merton |
