It flows for {{convert|32|km}} and has a basin area of {{convert|208.8|km2|abbr=on}}.[1] It begins near the village of Patranys, in the Krakės eldeship. The Smilga river flows mostly in a southeasterly direction through the Josvainiai forest. It joins the Nevėžis in the centre of Kėdainiai.
