HistoryThe recruitment process as been around since the beginning of the formation of sororities, the first, Alpha Delta Pi being founded in 1851 at Wesleyan Female College.[4] The recruitment into Greek life on college campuses has experienced failures that ultimately led to the adoption of a centralized matching procedure whereby a matching is determined by preference lists submitted by the potential new members.[5] In the beginning of the formation of Greek organizations, seniors were the only ones who were eligible to join; however, more students from other grade levels desired to be a part of Greek life and it was opened to juniors, then sophomores, and finally freshmen.[5] The process of "lifting", in which a Greek member would leave one chapter and join another, was not uncommon in the late 1800s and early 1900s during the start of fraternities and sororities; however, it was frowned upon.[5] To solve this issue and others, the first intersorority conference was called to discuss interfraternity cooperation. Although resolutions were passed, they had little effect until 1928 when the National Panhellenic Council was ready to focus on a centralized system of matching and the first mention of the preferential bidding system began.[5] This preferential bidding system has since been incorporated into the current recruitment activities of sororities.[5] TermsThere are different terms used in the recruitment process, they may vary from university to university, but some of the general terms include:
PreparationSome potential new members begin preparing in the summer before the school year begins and have a resume emphasizing community service, leadership, academics and teamwork, letters of recommendation from alumnae of each chapter, preferably on the campus in question, and reference letters at the ready before even beginning the rush process.[2] While other schools require none of the prerequisites and girls can decide to go through the rush process weeks before. A potential new member will usually need to register for recruitment. Registration will vary by school and there may be a deadline and some sort of fee that goes along with registration.[1] Some potential new members even hire consultants to coach them in the recruitment process; getting them ready with advice including what to wear and say.[2] New members need to be mentally prepared to go through rush because the rush process can be a very emotional and stressful at times as well as fun. New members are going to sororities, spend a small amount of time with them and then moving on so keep in mind that it is very easy for a sorority to drop people because they have a lot of other girls they need to keep or drop for the next day, there are just too many people to take all of them so do not take it to heart. That being said it is all worth it once in a sorority because it is great support group and family. Just make sure you have enough clothes for rush because some schools make you dress up for all three days while others supply a shirt. Try to stand out and be yourself, they have heard the answer "I joined to make friends" a million times and are going to hear it a million more times so try to think of a real reason as to why your joining and be ready to repeat everything you say a few times because your conversation with each sorority will most likely be the same. Recruitment guidesPNMs will be assigned a recruitment guide to lead them through the week’s activities and assist the girls by answering question and giving moral support.[1] The program of recruitment guides was developed by the National Panhellenic Council to provide support for the potential new members before, during, and after the recruitment process.[6] These guides are called "Rho Gammas," "Pi Chis,"[7] "Gamma Chis"[6] or something similar, but all have the same task no matter the title.[1] Recruitment roundsThe process includes a number of rounds that usually last around 5 days, with one round per day.[1] Rush occurs at different times of years depending on the university it usually happens in early fall, mid January, and/or spring. There are different themes for each round, including philanthropy and skits.[1] The first rounds are the shortest, getting longer each day. The beginning rounds include small conversations with sisters in the sorority, then comes philanthropy and skit rounds. Once the new member completes a round at a house she will go back to her recruitment counselor and make note of how she liked the chapter.[1] The number of houses a new member visits narrows each day to preference night which is usually the longest and most serious round,[3] in which a potential new member will visit only 1-3 chapter houses at a typical campus.[1] Bid day is the final day of recruitment and can have several different outcomes: the PNM could receive a bid from her top choice, receive a bid from one of the other chapters she visited on preference night, not receive a bid, or receive a phone call offering a snap bid.[1] Girls can either accept or deny the bids they are given,[1] and the chapters have big celebrations welcoming the now new members into the sorority.[3] CostSororities can often cost a considerable amount of money in order to join. Most schools make you pay for just rushing because the sororities give you shirts and sometimes a little food. Once in the sorority there are more payments. Although people say you're paying for friends that is not really the case. All the money you are paying the sorority is going towards events. There is a date function every semester, semi in the fall and formal in the spring. Each one of these events requires the sorority to rent out a place that can hold 80 plus girls depending on the sorority and most people bring dates. Also they have to pay for the food at these events, formal has sit down dinner. That all can add up. On top of that there is retreat every semester. This includes renting a house for 80 plus girls which includes a security deposit. It is a few days feeding 80 plus people and it adds up. Every sorority has a sisterhood planner who plans all the sisterhood activities. That includes everything asorority plans for going out that they pay for. Every sister also needs to pay for a pin which can cost anywhere from $65 to a few hundred if you want diamonds on your pin. On top of all these things, every sorority needs to pay some money to CPC, the head of sororities. CriticismSeveral sororities were criticized for their methods of recruitment.[8] One notable incident was a recruitment video of Alpha Phi from the University of Alabama. The video was compared to Girls Gone Wild and was criticized by several for its lack of diversity and for its apparent sexism.
