The trio performed the song in their rock-pop band called El Sueño de Morfeo (ESDM) who were internally selected by the Spanish broadcaster Televisión Española (TVE) in December 2012. The broadcaster organised the national final Destino Eurovisión to select the song that ESDM would perform. The public had from 5 February 2013 until 11 February to select one of two songs via the internet that would be performed along with two other songs on the televised national final on 26 February. The results of the public vote combined with the votes of an international jury resulted in the selection of "Contingo hasta el final" as the Spanish entry. As a member of the "Big 5", Spain automatically qualified to compete in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest after being obliged by the competition's organisers to vote in the second semi-final. Performing during the show in position five, Spain placed twenty-fifth out of twenty-six competing countries with eight points. Background{{main article|Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest}}Prior to the 2013 contest, Spain had participated in the Eurovision Song Contest fifty-one times since its first entry in the 1961 edition. The nation has won the contest on two occasions: in the 1968 competition with the song "La, la, la" performed by Massiel and in the 1969 edition with the song "Vivo cantando" performed by Salomé, the latter having won in a four-way tie with France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Spain has also finished second four times, with Karina in the 1971 edition, Mocedades in the 1973 contest, Betty Missiego in the 1979 competition and Anabel Conde in the 1995 event.[1] In the 2012 edition, the country placed tenth with the song "Quédate conmigo" performed by Pastora Soler.[2] The Spanish national broadcaster, Televisión Española (TVE), broadcasts the event within Spain and organises the selection process for the nation's entry. TVE confirmed their intentions to participate in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest on 10 December 2012.[3] Many methods of selection have been used, with the most common method used by TVE being an internal selection to select the artist and song. From 2000 to 2011, TVE had set up national finals with several artists to choose both the song and performer to compete at Eurovision for Spain, with both the public and a panel of jury members involved in the selection.[4] For their 2013 participation, the artist was selected internally by the broadcaster, while the song was selected through a national final. This method had last been used by TVE in 2012.[5] Before EurovisionArtist selectionAfter Spain chose the singer Pastora Soler and attained their first top ten placing since the 2004 edition, TVE announced that they would continue to internally select the artist that would represent the nation for the Eurovision Song Contest through mutual dialogue.[6][7] One of the artists tipped early on as a possible candidate was David Bustamante, who stated in June 2012 that he was open to the idea of competing in Eurovision but he had no time to commit to the contest.[8] Worldwide media later suggested that Pablo Alborán was chosen to represent Spain but the record label EMI Music Spain issued a press release soon after denying the reports as he was preparing to promote his new album Tanto on tour.[9] Other artists that were rumoured to be in discussions with TVE included the multilingual singer Chenoa, fan favourite Malú, David Bisbal, the runner-up of the 2002 edition of the music contest television show Operación Triunfo,[10] Diana Navarro, Álex Ubago and Sergio Dalma.[11] On 15 December 2012, it was announced by TVE that the entrant for the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest would be disclosed two days later.[12] This was undertaken via the La 1 evening magazine programme +Gente where it was confirmed that the pop-rock band El Sueño de Morfeo (ESDM) would represent Spain in Malmö.[13] The band was formed in 2002. Its lead vocalist Raquel del Rosario changed the name three years later after reading a book about the interpretation of dreams which has a character called Morpheus. For Eurovision, they used the initials ESDM for better communication with the contest's international viewers and spectators.[13] During the subsequent press conference, the band stated that they had prepared and written three songs that contained a traditional Celtic influence; ESDM were also hoping to submit another two songs for presentation by TVE. They spoke of their plan to organise a meeting with Pastora Soler for the exchanging of ideas and to receive advice about competing in Eurovision.[14] Song selectionDestino Eurovisión was the national final format developed by TVE to select the Spanish entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2013. ESDM performed three candidate songs in the televised national final that was held on 26 February 2013 at TVE's studios in Sant Cugat del Vallès in the Catalan province of Barcelona and hosted by Carolina Ferre. The show was broadcast on La 1 as well as online via TVE's official website.[15] One of the three finalist songs was chosen through an Internet vote where two songs competed for a spot in the final. The online vote was held from 5 February to 11 February, and users were able to cast one single vote.[16] The results of the online vote were announced on 12 February. With 69.9% of the vote, the song "Atrévete" qualified for the final.[17] In the final, the winning song was selected by a combination of televoting (50%) and jury voting (50%). The professional jury consisted of José María Íñigo (journalist, Spanish commentator for the Eurovision Song Contest), Rosa López (singer, Spanish Eurovision entrant in 2002) and Marco Mengoni (singer, Italian Eurovision entrant in 2013).[15] After the votes from the jury panel and televote were combined, "Contigo hasta el final" was announced as the winner with a total of 72 points.[18]
PreparationOn 14 March 2013, a preview of the music video of "Contingo hasta el final" was premiered on TVE's evening magazine show +Gente. The video, directed by Pedro Castro and filmed in different locations in the municipality of Llanes in the Asturias in early March, featured two people who lost their faith in love as they did not know its meaning before they met.[19][20] On 24 and 25 March, a Sveriges Television film crew was flown to the Austrias to observe ESDM showcasing their hobbies along with them rehearsing and composing their songs in a recording studio.[21] An English language version of "Contingo hasta el final" was recorded and released during April 2013.[22] At EurovisionAccording to Eurovision rules, all nations with the exceptions of the host country and the "Big 5" (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom) are required to qualify from one of two semi-finals in order to compete for the final; the top ten countries from each semi-final progress to the final. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) split up the competing countries into six different pots based on voting patterns from previous contests, with countries with favourable voting histories put into the same pot. As a member of the "Big 5", Spain automatically qualified to compete in the final on 18 May 2013. In addition to their participation in the final, Spain is also required to broadcast and vote in one of the two semi-finals. During the semi-final allocation draw on 17 January 2013, Spain was assigned to broadcast and vote in the second semi-final on 16 May 2013.[23] In Spain, the second semi-final was broadcast on La 2 and the final was telecast on La 1 with commentary by José María Íñigo.[24] The Spanish spokesperson, who announced the Spanish votes during the final, was TVE news anchor and reporter Inés Paz.[25] The broadcast of the final was watched live by 5,639,000 million people, receiving a market share of 33.1 percent. This represented a decrease of 12.4 percent than the previous year and had 1,173,000 less viewers watching all of the competition.[26] FinalESDM took part in a half an hour technical rehearsal on 12 May, followed by two twenty-minute dress rehearsals on 15 and 17 May.[27] This included the jury final where professional juries of each country, responsible for 50 percent of each country's vote, watched and voted on the competing entries.[28] During the individual press conferences for the "Big 5" countries on 15 May, ESDM took part in a draw to determine in which half of the final the Spanish entry would be performed.[29] Spain was drawn to compete in the first half. After the second semi-final was held on 17 May, the shows' producers decided upon the running order of the final. The running order for the semi-finals and final was decided by the shows' producers rather than through another draw, so that similar songs were not placed next to each other.[30] Spain was subsequently placed to perform in position five, following the entry from Finland and before the entry from Belgium.[31] The Spanish performance featured lead singer Raquel del Rosario wearing a yellow dress that she designed in collaboration with the designer Yolanda Pérez of the Yolancris brand. Del Rosario elected to go barefooted for the song.[32] The guitarists David Feito and Juan Luis Suárez wore more casual outfits and remained in the starting positions throughout the song as no choreography was undertaken.[33][36] The performance began with a bagpipe player standing on the catwalk of the stage and performed the first notes of the song. The stage lighting and LED screens first displayed the blue and purple rays of the sun, imitations of waterfall-like lamps falling from the ceiling, and the rear of the stage was projected with white star-light twinkles. The colours changed to shades of red and orange as the song rose in tempo so that the warmth of the song could be reflected. Del Rosario walked along the catwalk of the stage and sung into a light box that illuminated to yellow. It rose upwards in the arena as did many other lamps in the audience. The stage director of the Spanish performance was Pedro Castro.[34][35][36] On the day of the final, Spain were considered by bookmakers to be the twenty-fifth most likely country to win the contest.[37] They achieved this predicted result with eight points; six came from Albania and two from Italy.[38] VotingVoting during the three shows consisted of 50 percent public televoting and 50 percent from a jury deliberation. The jury consisted of five music industry professionals who were citizens of the country they represent, with their names published before the contest to ensure transparency. This jury was asked to judge each contestant based on: vocal capacity; the stage performance; the song's composition and originality; and the overall impression by the act. In addition, no member of a national jury could be related in any way to any of the competing acts in such a way that they cannot vote impartially and independently. The individual rankings of each jury member were released shortly after the grand final at the digression of the participating country.[39] Below is a breakdown of points awarded to Spain and awarded by Spain in the first semi-final and grand final of the contest, and the breakdown of the jury voting and televoting conducted during the two shows:[38][40] Points awarded to Spain
